One could say that the need for religion is diminishing in our time. But when you think about it seems more complicated.
On one hand people want to be free and independent. They dont want other people or religion to tell them how to live. At first, they become satisfied and happy. But then deciding what is wrong and what is right starts to make them tired and afraid of making mistake. They feel lost and seeks something that they could turn to. So on the other hand people need something stable in their lives and dont want to take all the responsibility for their activities.
Also, if you think for example about an event that took place two months ago, I mean the death of the Pole Jan Paul II, it clearly shows the need of people for authorities, faith and being close to other people. South America is getting more and more Catholic and soon they will be largest Catholic group n the world.
Although people in Western countries and the U.S.A. may seem to turn back from religion, they in fact look for some small religious groups to feel that they belong somewhere and can find out how to live in such difficult time we live, where there are so many cultures, so many ways of life, many things are important and everybody has to make their own decisions reminding the consequences .
In conclusion, I would say that the need for religion is like a circle. You turn back from it and try to live on you own but then you realize that you cant and dont want to live like that so you are back at Church more aware of it importance than ever.
